5 Reasons Your Grandkids Would Like You to Move to Florida

floridasunshinestate.jpg

Everyone has a good idea why making the move to Florida would work for them, but one of the things that we often fail to consider is how that move could have a positive impact on the younger generations of our families.

No matter what ages your grandchildren might be, every young kid loves having the opportunity to brag about their “cool grandparents” living it up down in the Sunshine State. But even more than that, there are plenty of tangible benefits that those grandkids can enjoy on account of your Florida residency.

So, if you are still on the fence about whether making the move is right for you, take some time to consider these five reasons your grandkids would love for you to head south to Florida this year.

Theme Park Excitement

Disney World

Disney World

The very first thing at the top of just about every grandkid’s list is going to be having easy access to the theme park capital of the world.

Whether we are talking about young kids that are excited to visit the Magic Kingdom or teenagers gearing up for a trip to Universal’s Islands of Adventure, there are major theme parks dedicated to serving all age groups here in Florida.

Having grandparents that live anywhere near Orlando makes the process of getting down to Florida and visiting those parks so much easier than it would be otherwise. Busch Gardens in Tampa is also just under 90 minutes away.

White Sand Beaches

Girls Playing on White Sand Beach.jpg

Right behind the theme parks, is the fact that Florida offers beautiful white-sand beaches that can serve as a massive sandbox for those grandkids to play in.

Between building sandcastles, digging holes, and riding those mild Gulf Coast waves, you would be hard-pressed to find a youngster that doesn’t love heading to the beach.

And having grandparents that live down in Florida makes getting to those gorgeous beaches just a little bit easier.

Warm Winter Weather

Another reason that your grandkids would love for you to relocate to Florida is that you would be giving them an opportunity to escape the colder weather that they might be dealing with back home.

Many new Florida residents find that their grandchildren actually visit with them more after they move south than they ever did before..

Virtually Endless Golfing

Boys Playing Golf.jpg

If your grandchildren happen to be into golf, the warmer weather will give them opportunities to practice a bit more than their competitors back home in the north during the colder months.

Having the ability to get out on the course a few extra times each year could make a difference for developing college scholarship worthy skills.

Fun With Manatees

Kids with Manatees.jpg

You can take your grandkids to the zoo in pretty much any major city around the country, but there is only one place where you can take them to swim with manatees. The Gulf Coast of Florida is proud to be that place.

Whether your grandkids are obsessed with animals or you are just looking for a cool way to impress them, it doesn’t get much better than swimming alongside our giant sea cows down here in paradise.

Between all of the things that you can do here in Florida and the fabulous climate that you get to do them in, it’s no surprise that grandkids from all over the country travel here throughout the year to visit their grandparents.

So if you aren’t totally sold on Florida being a great place for you to retire, make sure you consider the impact it could have on your grandkids!

48 Hours in Orlando: Holiday Shopping Edition

Millenia Mall

Millenia Mall

The holiday shopping season has officially arrived, and there may be no better place in all of Florida to get started than Orlando. Whether you are shopping for friends or family, there is something for just about everyone on your list at one of the many retail destinations around the City Beautiful.

There is so much great shopping in Orlando that a simple day trip may not be enough, even though it is only about 90 minutes from the Villages of Citrus Hills. And, since shopping in Orlando is such a great place for a weekend getaway anyway, here is how we recommend spending 48 hours in Orlando for holiday shopping.

Day One: Disney Springs and Local Flavors

Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’

Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’

There is no sense in kicking off a weekend of shopping on an empty stomach, so our first stop after arriving in Orlando is going to be Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’. This monument to southern style food is best known for their fried chicken sandwich, which makes it a perfect spot to fill up before diving into the holiday fun.

Not only is Homecomin’ a fantastic place for lunch, but it is also located right in the middle of Disney Springs, which just happens to be filled with more than 100 retail shops to explore. So, once you have a little southern fuel in your belly, the next stop is a little bit of Disney-style retail therapy.

For dinner on the first night of our Orlando-based shopping spree, we are heading to Whisper Creek: The Kitchen, which is located inside the JW Marriot in Grande Lakes. Conventional wisdom would suggest that taking a longer ride to a hotel restaurant is a waste of time, but that is definitely not going to be the case here. The menu is simple, but every item on it will be memorable.

The Stubborn Mule

The Stubborn Mule

If you want a second dinner option or just a great place for a cocktail after dinner, The Stubborn Mule is fantastic. Whether you are looking for mules, martinis, or manhattans, this spot has a specialty cocktail for every palate.

Day Two: Mall Shopping, Lobster Rolls, and Tapas Spots

We might have done more eating than shopping on day one, so let’s start day two off on the right foot by heading to The Mall at Millenia. With more than 150 luxury retailers, this might be the best place in all of Florida to find those high-end gifts to spoil just about everyone in your family.

After two (or maybe three) excellent meals on your first day in Orlando, you might be looking for something a little bit lighter for lunch on day two, so we are going to hit up Bar Harbor Seafood for one of their traditional lobster rolls and a cup of clam chowder.

The Florida Mall

The Florida Mall

We’re going right back to the mall scene after lunch, but this time it will be The Florida Mall, which is an outdoor shopping destination that features more than 250 different retailers just minutes from all of the popular Disney destinations. If you can’t find a perfect gift or two here, you simply aren’t trying hard enough.

There are few things that work up an appetite quite like shopping, so when you are ready to treat yourself to a fabulous meal, Delaney’s Tavern is the first option on the list for day two. This fun and friendly “Cheers-style” tavern has one of the most exciting menus you will find in Florida, and there are plenty of great shareable small plate dishes.

If you are looking for an after-dinner cocktail or more delicious small plates, Santiago’s Bodega is another spot that will keep you interested with both the food and the drinks. With house-made sangrias and a huge tapas menu, don’t be surprised if you find yourself staying here a little longer than expected.

Day Three: Brunch Before the Outlets

The Diner

The Diner

We always start off day three of these 48-hour getaways with a brunch option, and the best place to do that is at The Diner. The Huevos Rancheros are fantastic, and everyone loves the Eggs Benedict, but don’t let yourself come here for the first time and not order those Chicken and Waffle Sliders.

It’s nearly impossible to spend two days in Orlando and not cross off most of your holiday shopping list, but if you have anything at all left to buy, the Orlando International Premium Outlets is going to be your best bet for getting the job done on this trip. This location has more than 180 retailers featuring every major name brand you might be looking for.

With everything from Disney merchandise to designer fashions, there is nothing that you can’t find at one of the many shopping destinations in and around Orlando.

So, when you are ready to get into the holiday spirit, this 48-hour trip is definitely going to be the best way to get started!

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is known for two things: it's iconic beachfront and the equally iconic shopping available on Las Olas Boulevard. This is a perfect destination for anyone who is passionate about arts and culture mixed with beachfront living.

While you are in Fort Lauderdale, make sure that you take the time to drive, ride, or stroll through Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and stop for burgers and beer at the park restaurant.

JacksonvilleFL-Waterfront.jpg

Jacksonville

The Jaguars put Jacksonville back on the map, but Florida residents have always known that this is a great spot for a weekend getaway. If you’re looking for an affordable way to stay at a luxury beachfront hotel, this is your destination. Jacksonville is also home to more than 20 miles of beautiful beaches, and they have the largest urban park system in the country.

Miami

Miami is best known for the late-night club scene you will find in South Beach, but this popular tourist destination actually has something for everyone. And because there are so many tourists that frequent the area, you can always find an Uber driver, and there are often some great deals on last-minute hotel rooms.

While you are in town, make sure that you head down to Joe's Stone Crab. They offer two versions of the Joe's experience with the casual take-out side and the formal restaurant side.

Most of our favorite weekend getaway destinations are cities or towns that are filled with fun things to do and great places to eat. But if you are looking for a getaway that is focused on golfing in a relaxing environment, Port St. Lucie should be at the top of your list.

Port St. Lucie is also the winter home of the New York Mets, so make sure you plan your trip around Spring Training!

Nights of Lights

St. Augustine

In terms of history, no city in the country can match what you will find in St. Augustine. Known as the "Nation's Oldest City," it is here that you will find landmarks like Castillo de San Marcos, Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth, and the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse.

But don't let the history make you think that St. Augustine doesn't have a modern flair as well. The city is also home to a thriving restaurant scene where you will be hard pressed to run out of options.  And now is the perfect time to visit as they have the Nights of Lights running nightly November 23rd, 2019 through February 2nd, 2020.

Palm Beach Zoo

Palm Beach Zoo

West Palm Beach

Don't let the name fool you because West Palm Beach is actually located on the east coast of Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale. This classic "Old Florida" community is home to stunning white sand beaches, as well as four different retail districts to keep all the shopaholics happy.

West Palm Beach is also home to the Palm Beach Zoo and the Norton Museum of Art.

When you live at the Villages of Citrus Hills, you may never feel the urge to leave the community. But if you decide to venture out, you can’t go wrong with any of the destinations we’ve mentioned here.

Florida is a big state with a wide range of different options that appeal to different people for different reasons.

But if you are considering relocating to the Sunshine State, Citrus County, which just so happens to be the home of the Villages of Citrus Hills, presents one of the best options you could choose for a number of reasons.

Residents of Citrus County are in a position to enjoy all of the best aspects of Florida at the same time. They get to experience the famous Florida climate. They are right next to the Gulf Coast, while still not too far from the Atlantic Coast. Great cities like Tampa, Orlando, and Gainesville are just a short drive away, and the entire region is filled with amazing state parks and forests.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most significant benefits of living in Citrus County:

53% Will Never Be Built On

Many people who relocate to Citrus County don’t realize this fact until after they move here, but more than half of the county is protected areas that will never see any type of construction. This assures residents that Citrus County will never suffer from becoming overbuilt the way other parts of Florida have.

Ideal Climate

Skyview Foilage Golfers.jpg

The location of Citrus County along the Gulf Coast near the central part of Florida gives it one of the best climates in the entire country. The average high in the summer is in the low 90’s, and the average low in the winter is in the mid-40’s. This moderate climate allows residents to avoid the cold winters without having to endure the 100+ degree summers that residents find in southern Florida and Arizona.

Low Cost of Living

Like all Florida residents, those living in Citrus County are not subjected to any state income tax. However, unlike some of the more urban parts of the state, Citrus County residents enjoy a relaxed atmosphere where they don’t have to worry about gouging prices that you might find in many popular tourist areas. The cost of living is very reasonable in Citrus County.

Parks and Trails

Whether you are looking for large state parks, great walking trails built from abandoned railroad lines, or small community parks that offer some of the best sunset views you will find anywhere, Citrus County has them all. There are an unbelievable number of different parks and trails throughout the county that all offer their own unique version of nature in Citrus County.

Day Trips to “Old Florida” Towns

Another advantage that the geographic location of Citrus County offers is that residents are within a short drive of quite a few different “Old Florida” towns that all make for great day trips. Many of these small towns have great historic shopping districts, outstanding restaurants, and plenty of history and art museums.

An Enormous Amount of History

From the historic sites of the Second Seminole War to the shell mounds of ancient natives, Citrus County is packed with tons of great history and plenty of places to learn all about it. The county also has a long history of producing outstanding thoroughbred horses, including multiple Kentucky Derby champions.

Gulf Coast Lifestyle

Living in Citrus County places you right in the heart of the Gulf Coast Lifestyle. Fishing, boating, and sunbathing at the beach will all be only minutes away. You can also participate in popular local activities like collecting scallops, catching stone crab claws, or swimming with the manatees.

Close to Tampa and Orlando

This gives Citrus County residents access to great shopping, cultural events, and professional sports teams that many people like to experience from time to time.

Public and Protected Lands

Many people who relocate here don’t realize that Citrus County covers approximately 700 square miles, of which more than 152,000 acres are set aside as public and protected land. Half of the county is a protected area that will never see any type of construction. This assures residents that Citrus County will never suffer from becoming overbuilt the way other parts of Florida have.

Ideal Climate

One of the main reasons people move to Florida is the year-round sunshine.  In a state known for great weather, Citrus County has Florida’s best.

Unlike humid South Florida, the region surrounding the Villages of Citrus Hills doesn’t have the Everglades water effect.  We instead sit on the Central Ridge.  At 260 feet above sea level, the Villages of Citrus Hills benefits from the breezes off the nearby Gulf of Mexico, keeping the climate temperate all year round.

Citrus County’s year-round average is about 72 degrees with 65 percent humidity.  In fact, comfortable days are the norm.  We enjoy 274 days a year in the temperature “comfort zone”, which falls between 65 and 75 degrees.  It also means you won’t spend the whole summer hiding from the heat in your air-conditioned home.  Beautiful weather isn’t just a perk; it will improve your quality of life.
